Reichert Tono-Pen Avia

The tip of this device must be placed perfectly flat onto the apex of the eye in order to get a pressure reading. To avoid having the tap the patient’s eye multiple times to get one good reading, the ophthalmic technicians needed an instrument that was comfortable and easy to hold and allowed precise positioning of the tip. Through multiple iterations and field testing, a unique form was developed that allowed the device to be supported along the top of the hand and promoted use of a precision pencil-type grip near the tip of the instrument. This grip posture perfectly positions the underside of the hand to allow it to rest on the patient’s cheek, providing a fulcrum for stability and precision. Also, to allow easy use in either hand, there is a display on both sides of the device.
