Medtronic Straightshot M4 Microdebrider

The M4 surgical handpiece is used in ENT surgeries to remove polyps from nasal sinuses. Field observations & interviews revealed that surgeons want to optimize for precision and control and often “choke up” on their surgical instruments to get their hands as close as possible to the working end. As a result, a very unique grip interface was created for the M4 grip zone to position it as close as possible to the instrument tip. A contoured surface was added on the underside of the handpiece to allow the middle finger to wrap around it in a natural grasping motion. This provided grip security and control when holding the handpiece and operating the finger wheel with the index finger to rotate the cutting window.
